Faculty Development Program

Advanced registration is required for all KCPDC events. Registration is FREE to employees of member institutions. Please contact your campus representative for registration.

This program is designed to provide faculty with the tools and resources for becoming more effective in the classroom. Full-time and adjunct faculty who choose to complete the six core classes and an additional two elective offerings will receive a certificate. Effective July 1, 2011, FDP elective requirements can be satisfied by attending two of the ÔSpecial TopicsÕ sessions or the annual Enhancing Teaching & Learning Conference.

  • Instructional Strategies - Sep. 30, 2011

    Description: As a result of attending this workshop, faculty attendees will be able to:

    • Establish clear student learning outcomes
    • Identify and apply a wide variety of instructional strategies
    • Facilitate student learning by aligning methods with outcomes
    • Determine the value of currently used strategies
    • Relate the levels of learning in Bloom's taxonomy to methods of instruction
    • Develop a learner centered philosophy of instruction
    • Move student learning to higher level thinking skills per Bloom's taxonomy
  • Evaluating Student Learning - Oct. 21, 2011

    Description: As a result of attending this workshop, faculty attendees will be able to:

    • Create assessment tools in relation to learning outcomes
    • Identify and apply a wide variety of assessment strategies
    • Create assessment tools that address higher level thinking skills
    • Integrate test analysis and correction as part of the student learning process
    • Create and use rubrics to guide assessment
    • Use formative and summative assessments as well as alternatives
  • Managing the Learning Environment - Nov. 18, 2011

    • Determine how arrangement and teacher placement impact learning models for managing the classroom environment and students
    • Choose among several strategies to increase student participation
    • Encourage students to become more responsible for their choices
  • Diversity in the Classroom - Jan. 27, 2012

    Description: As a result of attending this workshop, faculty attendees will be able to:

    • Define diversity
    • Determine from where biases come
    • Understand the impact biases have on behavior
    • Analyze how cultural norms and behaviors impact inequities
    • Create strategies for moving beyond differences
    • Design curricular activities and share best practices
  • Active Learning - Feb. 17, 2012

    Time: 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

    Location: KCKCC, Upper Jewell Building, Room 3398

    Presenter: Kate Duffy

    Description: This workshop provides training that is both didactic and participative. Small working groups are used to consider several scenarios provided by the trainer, and discussion within the buzz groups occurs. These buzz groups are then reorganized and comments and questions are fielded.

  • Writing Across the Curriculum - Apr. 20, 2012

    Time: 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

    Location: CTU

    Presenter: Kate Duffy

    Description: This course is designed to familiarize instructors with writing across the curriculum theories and techniques that can be used immediately in any course. Using WAC strategies enables students to learn and cement new concepts more deeply. After taking this workshop, instructors will be able to develop writing assignments that will help them know if the students have mastered the process of learning as well as course content.
