Faculty Development Program
Diversity in the Classroom
As a result of attending this workshop, faculty attendees will be able to:
- Critically assess myths of class, race, and gender that dominate in the US.
- Model a classroom environment that encourages healthy intellectual tension and discussion while defusing potentially volatile issues of cultural, sexual, religious and other types of diversity.
- Demonstrate three practices of establishing trust in the classroom.
- Model methods of active and empathic listening in polarized discussions that will assist students in understanding and accepting differences in the classroom.
- Develop collaborative group activities that address the issues of race, class, gender, sexuality and other issues.
