How to Start a Learning Community

As a result of attending this workshop, faculty attendees will be able to:

  • Develop a syllabus that includes learning outcomes integrating two or more interdisciplinary courses.
  • Identify the three characteristics faculty teaching learning communities should have.
  • Create a learning environment that encourages collaborative and interdisciplinary learning.
  • Develop learning strategies that encourage community within the classroom.
  • Explain the difference between a linked and an integrated learning community.
  • Demonstrate the value of instructors being co-learners with the students and learning the language of another discipline.
  • Create a learning environment that encourages critical thinking within and across disciplines.
  • Demonstrate how interdisciplinary knowledge can be applied to real world experiences.
